I just added an additional server into my domain, and will need to start backing up the files on the new server. I have an old version of Veritas 8.0, and I'm thinking its time to upgrade to something more recent. The main question I have is, will the new Veritas 10.0 backup 2 servers without buying any addons? If not what do I need to purchase so that I can backup both servers? I ask this question because the 8.0 requires some add-on to backup over the network.

I dont think it has changed but, try adding the server and just modifying the job to backup a new share (no agent on the new server) and see how it works.

Mike,
Hey thanks for the reply. I just created a job to backup a user-defined share. I selected the \\server\D$ to backup the D:, and I receive the error posted at the end. I guess I need to purchase an Agent to do this? The reason I'm also thinking about upgrading my Veritas is my backup job I did last night ejected my tape, and wanted a new tape to continue. The tape is 320GB with compression, and for some reason the tape was ejected at 204GB with a message wanting new media. I just added an additional 200GB to backup the other day, so this is why it just happened. When I do a full backup like last night I have Veritas overwrite any existing media, so I would think the 320GB should be available.License Violation

well I guess that message answers that! Hate it, I normally use CA ArcServeIT and like it alot. You might look into that and compare some prices.

ArcServ rocks....it's probably one of the best (if not the best) backup programs available.
However, in the interest of not spending more $ on software of any kind......
Since the new server is running Windows 2003 server the simple (and less expensive solution) is to use the native ntbackup to perform the backup on the new server, copy the backup file to the old server and have it put in a folder that's included in the original server's backup set.
This can be done with a single batch file that will map the network drive, perform the backup, copy the file, then disconnect the mapped drive (if you don't want to leave that drive connected). Once you have your batchfile created and have tested it, then you just create a scheduled task to run the batchfile at a time prior to the main backup on the other server so the updated backup file is on the old server before it runs it's backup.
If you can't figure out how to do this, email me and I'll send you a copy of the batch file I created to do this and you can use it as a template to create your own backup.

Oops! I just realized my email wasn't wired into the previous reply. I've set it now so it should work.

Curt,
Thanks for the help, and the offering of additional help. I decided to update to a new version of Veritas, and buy an additional agent. The price wasn’t bad because of the option for an upgrade version.
