Hi Guys!

I'm new to Windows 2003 setup/configuration and all. What I am trying to achieve is having a domain, allowing users of the domain (in Active Directory) connect to the Windows 2003, and retrieving their data stored on the Server.

I am achieving this through the User Profile (Profile Path setting) in the active directory for each user. However I'm not sure if this is the right way to do it, also because I would like the data to be transferred at 'real-time'. At the moment what happens is when the user logs off, the new data changes are transferred to the server, but what if the laptop hangs up? or would the session still be marked as active?

Could anyone guide me or provide a link showing how to correctly set up such a configuration ? As ive been trying this on an experiment basis, and also have no idea what Home Folder (Local Path/Connect) are about.

Thanks

Regards,

V

Are you trying to have the "user profile" stored on the server so that favorites, my documents, etc. are the same no matter what computer they are on, or are you trying to provide access to specific files (stored on the server) to users?

I ask because, if you just have files in a folder shared on the server, and prevent those items from being used with "offline files" then those files will only be accessible when connected to the domain and will be updated in real-time when changed.

If you set up the roaming user profile, then the profiles will be stored on the server. When the client logs onto a client computer, the profile is copied to the client computer, modified there, and then synced back to the server a logoff and/or on a time interval. This is done so that if the domain is unavailable or the network goes down, the crucial parts of windows (the user profile folder) is still available.
