Hello everyone!

I just joined this group, and I have found some valuable info on it already....
I am looking for advise in upgrading my NT4 domain to W2K3, currently I am still in the planning phase, and I am pondering various upgrading paths.

I have 6 servers; 1 PDC, 2 BDC's, 1 member server running Terminal Server with Citrix, and Exchange 5.5, a file server, and one remote box (connected through a linux VPN) on the West Coast. In total I have about 95 users on the East Coast, and 5 users on the West Coast.

I am running external DNS servers, and I have an internal WINS server.

Most of my users are on logon scripts which only map drives.

My goal is to become a W2K3 network with full AD, and run Exchange 2003. I also would like to have one of the servers run DNS.

I will replace all servers with new (Dell) hardware, and I will retire all hardware currently running NT4. I have added a full T-1 (we were running a fractional previously). I have upgraded one of our switches to a 24-port Dell Gb switch, and I am planning to connect every server to that, the remaining ports are for dedicated high bandwidth users. In addition, I have already bought a couple of nice PowerEdge 2600 boxes. One came with a standard OEM W2K3 license, the other one I had to get a Retail one for. This license enabled me to bring up one of the Poweredges as an NT4 BDC. A few days ago I promoted this box to PDC so it could sit and replicate for a while. During the upgrade, I can take one of my current BDC's off of the network and keep it as the recover-from-failure machine.

I am not sure where in the sequence I should upgrade my Exchange 5.5 Server. I think AD will replace WINS, but Exchange 5.5 needs WINS, right?
I would also like to know if it hurts a Domain Controller's performance to run DNS?
And finally, I have been given a full weekend to do the conversion, where the entire network can be down for 52 hours. Could I make this work? I can do a lot in advance, if I could set up W2K3 boxes as current domain members, and get our client server ERP running, or if I could bring up a W2K3 box, and take my time installing Exchange 2003 on AD and DNS before killing the WINS server.

Sorry about the rambling, but my head is spinning with upgrade stuff....

Any input, recommendations, pitfalls, and experiences are highly valued......

TIA,

Paul
