OS: Win Server 2003
CPU/Ram: P4
Product: Hp Proliant
Comment:

I've recently added a HP Proliant ML150 G2 Server (Win Server 2003) to my Lan with a manually configured IP of 192.168.1.7 SM 255.255.255.0

The Proliant (with correct IP) appears in my routers routing table but now also includes an unknown device with IP address of 192.168.1.252. I am able to ping this unknown device but have no idea what it is. Entering 192.168.1.252 in the browser of any of my LAN workstations I receive a prompt for username and password for BMC. I am assuming that BMC here is refering to BMC Patrol (Remote access) but nothing of this kind is, or ever has been installed on the Proliant. Disconnecting the Proliant from my LAN removes IP's 192.168.1.7 and 192.168.1.252 from the routing table.

I have contacted HP tech support regarding this matter but so far they have been as stumped as myself. Other than configuring IP address and user accounts, the Proliant remains as it was delivered....pre-installed with Win Server 2003, no other sofware yet installed.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Alan

RRAS isn't engaged on the server? Who is serving out dhcp?

configure a wkst with the x.x.x.252 ip address. Bring up the server. You will get a ip conflict message. Note the mac address. Trace the mac address by looking at your switch tables [if managed switches]or see if its the server nics mac

Give a person a fish, they eat for a day. Suggest they internet search and they learn a skill for a lifetime.

Not sure if I've found the answer to my own question yet but it seems as though I'd tried everything other than the obvious. It occured to me soon after posting my request for help that the only thing I hadn't tried was to manually assign the NIC with the unknown IP 192.168.1.252 - which seems to have done the trick. Maybe with DHCP enabled on the router the "Embedded Broadcom NetXtreme 5721 PCI-E Gigabit NIC" on the Proliant is pre-configured to request 252 host address, but as I don't have DHCP enabled I'm none the wiser.

Server only has one NIC (Embedded).
RRAS not enabled.
Router DHCP not enabled.

Thanks Jestible and Wanderer for your replies. I'm away from my usual workplace for the next couple of days so unable to try any of your suggestions but will do so when I return.
