I'm running Windows Server 2003. I've been using ICS
(internet connection sharing) for my other computer to be
able to access the internet.I have my dsl modem connected to my 2003 server with two
NICS. My spare NIC connects directly into my XP Home
computer. I have ICS+ICF(internet connection firewall)
on the NIC connected to the dsl modem.Well I have unchecked the ICS+ICF boxes which I thought
would turn off those services. Well when I goto the RRAS
snap-in and attempt to configure it, I get the error
message, "ICF is currently enabled on SERVER. To
configure RRAS, please disable ICF and try again."I'm at a loss of what is wrong. I've even uninstalled
the NIC ICS was setup on, disabled the ICF+ICS service,
and I still get the same error message. I've checked the
other NIC, but ICF is not enabled. Is there another place I
need to check?-Other things I have done:
Well I disabled both NICS, unchecked the ICF and ICS boxes. Stopped and disabled the ICF+ICS service.
Rebooted.
Made sure RRAS service was running and ICS+ICF service was stopped and disabled. Tried configuring it, and I still get the same error that the ICF service is running, and I need to disable it.
I enabled both NICS and tried configuring.
I reenabled ICS and ICF. That is what I've been using. It is working fine. I cleared ICF and rebooted. Then I cleared ICS and rebooted. Then I configured a static IP for the second NIC(internet NIC already has static IP) and other workstation.
I successfully pinged other workstation.
Tried to configure RRAS with same error message.
One thing I have noticed though. If I enable ICS or ICF, the setting button is clickable. I have configured a whole bunch of settings there in regards to port forwarding to my other workstation and this server. These settings are still there after I have disabled and reenable ICF and ICS. Could the existance of those settings make Windows to "think" ICF is running?
I could try deleting all of them, but if it didn't work, it would be time consuming to set them all up again. If there was a way to back those settings up from a certain file just in case...
I had recently switched the NIC that was using ICS/ICF to the other one. One NIC is 10mbps and the other 100mbps. I had the 10 on the internal and the 100 to the dsl. Of course this doesn't make sense, so I swapped the cables and the ICS settings on the NICS.
This sounds kinda similar to what your issue was. The problem is, I don't know how to fix this. I've renabled/disabled ICF/ICS on both NICS and no results.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks in advance!
