Two OS's?

OS: Win XP Pro

Can I install two operating systems on one computer? I have two seperate hard drives.

Windows Server does not install the driver I need for the network card, and I had to format the hard drive before installing it. Now it won't let me install the driver for the ethernet controller, something about the file not being what it expected.(I know it's the right one.)

I was hoping I could install XP on one drive for the driver, but have the computer boot from the other drive.

Is any of this possible? I am super new to Windows Server so it is entirely possible I screwed it up.

Your OS is listed as XP. Are you running that or just Server 2003? Have you tried removing the Ethernet card (assuming it's PCI) and letting P&P detect it?

Sorry, XP on one of my machines and I'm installing Server 2003 on another.

XP is the OS I happen to have that I could install with the server (still assuming that is possible.)

I will try removing the ethernet card and see if that helps.

Thanks.

If that doesn't work (un/reinstalling the NIC) then try downloading the lastest NIC drivers from the manufacturer's web site and use them.

I tried removing the card and letting P&P detect.

I tried removing the device from device manager and reinstalling it.

I downloaded several drivers including the ones from the NETGEAR website.

I get the same answer every time. "An error occurred during the installation of the device. The style of the INF is different than what was requested."

Has anybody ever heard of this? Does anybody know how to fix this? Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.

Yep, I've heard of it and it usually means you have the wrong driver for your NIC.

Make sure you know the make/model of the NIC (ethernet controller) you're trying to install the drivers for and then make sure you're downloading the latest correct driver for your NIC.

If you've done that, or do it and still no joy, you could have a bad network card......replace it.

I definitely have the right driver, so I guess a new card is all thats left. But it stopped working just as I installed the new OS so I was hoping it was something I did that could be fixed.

Thanks for all your help.
