Comment:

I have a client who is running VISTA and connecting through Remote Desktop to his server (win SBS2003 R2). The machine has a HP P1505 printer attached.
The printer maps no problem to the server, but the documents only print if I stop/start the print spooler.
I have connected the same printer with the same driver to my computer (also Vista) and it maps fine and prints fine....
Event Viewer has no help or errors....
Any ideas??

Are the drivers installed on the server as well as the client's machine?

Yup...same driver on server, problem machine and my laptop. Again the strange thing is that the printer shows up...no worries there, but it simply will not print unless I stop/start the spooler on the server.

Thanks for the follow up...any help would be appreciated!!

My girl friend had a similar problem with a VPN to her job. She can't print to home network printer when connected through the VPN. The answer is, as far as I know, that split tunneling is disabled.

I was wondering if that might help is finding a solution to your client's problem.

Thanks all for the input.

What I failed to mention (and I am very sorry) is that the user account is the administrator account...full rights across the network.

It has to be something on the client's machine since it works fine on mine...same printer same user account.

Print sharing is enabled.

I tried to switch the printer preferences on the clients machine to print directly to printer, instead of spooling. This allows the printing through TS to work great, but renders printing locally dead in the water.

...any ideas?...so very frustrating.

That is odd. It sounds like a driver issue at one end or the other. Are both drivers the same type? PCL5, PCL6, or PS? If the driver is PCL6 or PS (Post Script), try changing it to PCL5. Printer sharing should not matter as it doesn't have any bearing when printing through a Terminal session.

Is the client computer connection through double routers? Is it possible his home modem is acting like a router, and he has another router hooked up to that?

If finding an answer proves futile, a workaround can be to install a PDF printer on the server like PDF995, then have him output his printouts to PDF and copy them to his local hard drive to print locally. Takes a few extra steps, but if an answer isn't found otherwise...

Assume that I already did an Internet search.
