I need to transfer windows 2003 server to a new machine, and I am a bit worried about the pitfalls that I may encounter. I have no fancy configuration, only Active Directory with some users and a punch of group policies. Mean while I want to retain all the users in the current Active Directory intact after the installation of the new windows 2003 server on the new machine. Which procedures should I follow, and I would be grateful if any of you can share his/her experience or provide me with tips to make the operation seamless as possible

I hate to say it, VmWare it... I would use VmWare Conveter to get the image and then use it to move the guest OS to the new Server.

Thanks JackR for the reply, but I would like to install windows from ground up on the new machine since we are getting a new machine. Thats why I am concerned with the pitfalls of a domain transfer procedure.

then you need to backup the system state database on the server, then when you restore it, using the advance DCpromo commands to add the system state back into the new server.

So in my case which is better "dcpromo /advace" or "ntbackup backup systemstate"?

Full backup your old machine and do a one or two file test restore
Install W2K3 to new machine Join the new machine to domain DCPROMO up Reboot
Now shutwdown the old one Go to client PC and test if you can login to the new one Test if you can access shared resources
If everything works fine... DCPROMO down the old one and make it as member server for a few days. If everything works fine... Shutdown the old one for a few days If everything works fine... Bring up the old one and remove it from the domain and shut it down. Do a final test from clients If everything works fine... Go home and have some beer!
