Comment:

I recently had an issue with someone not being able to login to our VPN because of having too few license tokens for Terminal Server. I installed new tokens, and in the Terminal Server Licensing console under Administrative Tools, where there used to be 4 headings under the main heading of my server (which of course is under the heading "All servers", there is now 5 headings. The new one is Windows Server 2003 - TS Per Device CAL.

The 4 original headings, in order, were:

1) Existing Windows 2000 Server - Terminal Services CAL token (per device) (nothing is under this heading
2)Windows Server 2003 - Terminal Server per User CAL Token (A 'not applicable' token is placed here)
3)Windows Server 2003 - Terminal Server Per Device CAL Token (this is where the tokens are for our users who have used our VPN for a while
4)Temporary Licenses for Windows Server 2003 - Terminal Server Per Device CAL Token

I am wondering why this new, 5th heading, was placed there because it seems to be named the same thing as the 3rd. The 5th is also where the token is for the person who couldn't initially login.

Thanks

1. you can't use 2000 TS licenses on 2003

2. is the license key the same on the two 2003 entries? If so you just re-entered the same key twice and it will show up that way.

Fact you are getting temp licenses means you are over your license count for usage.

My suggestion is get all your paper licenses out, call MS TS support and with their help wipe everything out and re-enter to get your correct and accurate TS license display.

You might want to review this:
http://www.brianmadden.com/content/...

which has this "A TS license server will function before it’s activated via the Microsoft clearinghouse, however, an unactivated license server will only pass out temporary TS CALs that expire after 90 days"

Imagine the power if you knew how to internet search

No, the key is not the same for the 2 2003 entries. One has a key that says 'Not Applicable' and the other has all 8 keys, of the computers that use the VPN listed in it.
