System State / Registry Corruption?

OS: Windows Server 2003 x64
CPU/Ram: xeon 4 GB

Comment:

Upon reboot many services fail to start. System Log shows "file/path not found." Services in HKLM show ImagePath missing. Entering proper path allows service (and then dependent services) to start; however, System State cannot be backed up (Backup Exec 11d). Problem happens at any reboot.

Why could this be happening? How can we fix?

Look for possible hardware problems. Run a memory tester. Bad memory can cause registry corruptions that aren't noticed till after a reboot. Also test hard drives and also check file system with a "chkdsk /r" in the command prompt.

If it's an OEM PC, (Dell, HP, IBM, etc) they usually have built in diagnostics, but DocMemmory has always been my favorite for testing memory.

Found the source. A (free) registry clean-up utility I've used successfully for several years apparently wiped key registry entries. My bad.

HAHAHAA. At least you were man enough to own up to it. We've all made mistakes before or had something we always thought safe to do turn bad on us. At least you were able to find it.
