This problem is really really easy for the right person as most of it has been done, and all that is left, is a script that is needed to make it all work. i have to tell you enough about the problem in orfer for anyone to help though. A Thomson Speedtouch 330 modem is connected and the drivers are installed. If you log on and double click the icon on the desktop, then the internet connection is established. The username & password stored in dialog boxes. If the server is locked then clients can access the internet through ICS. However if you log off the computer then internet connection is lost to the client computers. Now of course i don't want to use ICS. i want the server to remain connected to the internet even when no one is logged on. So, what was done? A service acccount bigbadblobby@ntlworld.com with password that is used to log onto the internet. i actually have no idea why i was told to do this. Then a service was added using the windows server 2003 resource kit. The service was called speedtouch and it linked to a file. The registry was edited and a link was made between the service and the executable c:\program files\thomson\speedtouch \stdialup.exe. Please don't worry if you feel there isn't enough details, because all this works. The service was duly started and the event log said the service had started with no reported errors. So what's the problem? When i restarted the computer and tried to start the internet, internet explorer displayed an almost empty page except for "Authenitcation error" written in red and centred on the top line of the page. In event viewer there was an error in the system log, and please forgive me, i don't have the server on right now, perhaps i will look it up later. Roughly it said, a connection to the remote computer was established but was disconnected due an 'authentication error'. The only thing i can think of, is that the username & password is not being passed over to the ISP for authentication. A friend of mine said that maybe a startup script is necessary to make this happen. when i pressed him further he shrugged his shoulders, that this was something he disn't know anything. Now i don't want to learn about creating scripts, but does anyone know of such a script? Could you write one as a reply? Please? Millions if not billions of servers remain connected to the internet even when no one is logged onto the server, all over the planet. The idea that no one seems to anything about it, is unbelieveable. i have tried doing many searches and there is very little about this final step. i did get the rest of the solution from the net, but this last bit was not mentioned. i left a note Thomson on their website. Do you think they bothered to reply?
