OK - machine manufacturers and software companies will all tell you what the "minimum" requirements are to run their product. But let's face facts - I don't' think anyone has a server running the minimum requirements. So here is my question - With Windows Server 2003, Active Directory, Exchange, MS SYQL and file and print sharing (engineering CAD drawings) - what would you guys think would make for the best performance. Be creative - I am open to suggestions. Multiple servers, multiple processors, IDE vs. SCSI - what is your wish list - Please sound off - I need the input. Thanks - Tommy Whitewolf

Honestly I'd be looking at two servers at the very least.

Agreed....possibly even 3 depending on how much traffic the different services will support. What I mean is, if your SQL and Exchange servers are going to be real busy, it would be better to have separate servers for each, and a DC as well.

As to type of hardware, well, I favor IBM xSeries servers with dual processors and dual memory channels and SCSI RAID adapters. Preferably with a 2 disk RAID 1 for the operating system and a minimum 3 disk RAID 5 for data.
