Server 2003 on a HP Proliant Server takes forever to shut down. Approx 30Mins but usally end up killing the power before then. the server has done it from new and takes just as long again straight after a fresh boot.

30 min is a little excessive but depending on what is loaded it can take a while. What is the server (meaning what services is it providing? app server, rpc/term serv, sql, etc?)Also, check the event log to see what the last service/process was to shutdown and you may be able to make a change.

well being on a small site it runs sevral roles... its primary domain/dhcp server, print/file shares, exchnage, AV software.
So could be any number of these taking ages to shut down.
Thanks

I have the same exact problem you are describing. Luckily, I know how to fix it. They problem is that exchange is trying to talk to the domain controller, but the DC has already shutdown. So exchange sits around forever until it times out, and the server goes down.
