I'm an Admin for the EAST program at a high school. I've been having problems with people not shutting down the computers at he proper time. I was wanting to know if there was a way to turn off one or more computers at a time from the server. Or if this is possible at all.
Thnx, the chicken

I use a batch file that automatically reboots all of our clients each night via a scheduled task. Now do you actually want to turn them OFF or just reboot them which basically logs them out?

I want to turn them off. But here's the big problem. I'm not quite a computer guru...but know enough to get myself in trouble, as they say. So, please, keep it in lamens terms.

Ok if you are going to be the admin, then understand this; the number one tool you should use is GOOGLE. www.google.com
Always search extensively for yourself before you post or else no one will want to help you, there are too many people on here asking for handouts, and normally guys like me just pass them up and don’t help. So use the words...I’ve searched high and low for the answer myself, but could not find anything useful, also note the places you have searched, Google, help docs, etc...
I searched Google for "turn computers off over the network" and the 3rd link down explained everything. Check it out. Very easy to understand.

Hope this helps and I’ll be glad to answer your questions if I have time. Just out of curiosity, what type of computer experience do you have, how many computers are you in charge of, any servers, and how did you get to be in charge of them?
Thanks
Scott

Check out Pstools, has PSShutdown. The whole toolset rocks.
Corn chips are no place for a mighty warrior!

Also, if I'm not mistaken, there's a "shutdown" tool available for Windows 2000/2003 in the Resource Kit.
How good it works I can't say.
I just thought I'd mention it though. But I do have to agree with hero (as usual......lol) you're probably better off with the sysinternals stuff.......they make some very nice tools and they work the way their supposed to.

There's also a shutdown command in XP/2003 builtin. However, in my experience it often shuts down the OS without powering the system off. That's why I use the freely available psshutdown, which ironically works better than Microsoft's own tools, despite the fact that psshutdown interacts with the target machine's dll's.

For some reason I thought that shutdown came from some 2000 tools kit.
You as admin could also use the power of remote desktop.
Wonder if MMC offers a snapin way for shutdown?

"For some reason I thought that shutdown came from some 2000 tools kit."
You are correct. But they also built a shutdown.exe into XP/2003 as well.

Add all ur workstatio ns into one group and then go to command prompt of your server type shutdown -i and select the group in which all workstations are present.

Thank you very much for all of your help. I appologize for not being able to check this sooner, I will be attempting all of these ideas later on today. I will get back here and advise upon them working or not.
Thnx, the chicken
