Hi,
I have been messing around with my servers for a while now, and I have ended up with 2 windows servers and an IPCop dedicated firewall machine. They are living in my spare room at the moment, and the noise is a bit much. I am wondering if it would be feasible to put them in the loft.I dont think heat would be an issue as they dont get very hot now and they will be less restricted in the loft. Although, if I were to put them in some kind of fire retardant box (which I would want to do) then it may be.
Are there any issues that I may have overlooked or anyone else who has done this and has some advice?
Thanks in advance,
Rob

Loft like in space available between the roof and the ceiling? First hot day and you will kill those boxes due to overheating.
Don't even think of putting them in a box of any kind. You would have to have fans [one input and one output]to cycle air in and out which kind of defeats the reason you are putting them there.
DO put in a smoke detector if putting them in the attic.Give a person a fish, they eat for a day. Suggest they internet search and they learn a skill for a lifetime.

Can't you change some of the fans for quieter ones? Zalman are regarded quite highly.
Regardless of that, I can't see why you wouldn't be able to do everything you needed to the server through remote desktop if you did put them in the loft. I would be prepared to put one up there as long as it was ventilated.

Do you really think it would get that hot, I mean I do live in England, it's not exactly tropical. I'll see, but the box was to protect against fire so without it, would the risk be great?
Thanks for your input,
Rob

as long as its ventalited, in the summer keep an eye on the temps. extra fans will help. Smoke alarms ect will be a good idea. Speedfan or motherboard monitor will monitor temps Motherboard Monitor has a alarm setting for when it goes above a spesified temp.
Good luck

People Like Playing With Settings! Thats when it goes all wrong! Before you make any changed set a SYSTEM RESTORE point. You might regret it otherwise :-
