I have 2 servers. 1 server crashed so while i am waiting for my parts, i had a secondary dns server on server 2, i promoted that one to primary and then i use dcpromo to make my server 2 which was a member server a DC. I put the DC controller the same name as server 1 which was bubba. DCpromo went through ok.

Once i installed Active directory, all my local users became Domain users. All XP pc can log onto the server but when they try to access the server shares it wont let them unless i create a user account in AD users and computer that they can use that will not log onto the domain.

Second all my windows 2000 pro machine can log on to the server but when they try to access the shares and use the dummy account i created it wont let them.

I know DNS is setup correctly because i can ping the server by name and IP address and can do a nslookup to resolve the name ok from all machines. Is it possible that the DC from server 1 is still being reconized and causing conflict with server 2 since i used the same name even tho server 1 is down do to HDD failure and if so hwo to i fix this problem???

Your mistake was not knowing that AD replication is contained in the Global Catalog. Your global catalog holder died with no secondary GC holder.

This is why you ALWAYS have two DC's minimun in a MS network.

When you promoted the member server to a DC you created a new AD forest. May have the same names but sid wise two different networks.

Your network is at basics and brand new. You will need to recreate everything [accounts/file access/etc.]

Once you get your other server up makes sure it also is a global catalog holder and has dns server [key to survival].

Give serious consideration to mirroring the drives either hardware raid wise or with MS and dynamic disks.

Give a person a fish you feed them for a day.
Ask a person to internet search and they learn a skill for a lifetime.

I agree with wanderer..

how were you able to run DC Promo on Server 2 after your Server1 crashed? Did you create a New AD domain with same DNS Name?

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaim
