I have a secondary domain controller that stops responding after an undetermined amount of time. This happened after the os completely starts whether a user is logged in or not. the power savings on the server continue to work in shutting down the monitor but will not wake. when this feature is shut down the server will allow me to move windows but will not respond if any work is done. e.g. I can not start another program, click on start, close windows, Ctrl+Alt+Del does nothing. This also happens with a remote desktop (though I have not tested this in a while). While it is in this state I can ping the system from another network computer. but can not access network shares. I have tried to run windows update to get the latest hot fixes however they never finish because the server freezes before they finish.

To get the server to respond again I must hold down the power button and do a hard reboot. when the os is loaded again the error logs only the unexpected shutdown and my reason why. nothing in the logs are indicating what is causing this.

Could someone point me in the right direction to diagnose what is happening?

Thanks

Looks like the operating system is in a corrupted mode OR there is something wrong with a device driver. I would have to say, demote that domain controller, reinstall the OS and then make it a second domain controller again (hopefully it won't mess up any schema settings in the Active Directory by doing just this). If you believe it is a driver (my first attempt to troubleshooting before reinstallation), Check all your drivers and make sure they are not hanging the server.

I do not think it is a driver. The secondary server is identical to the primary and are using the same drivers. reinstalling the OS is a last resort. I was hoping of a way to diagnose if it is a corrupt OS or some other problem.
