Subject: Server 2003 C partition filling upOS: Windows 2003 Server SP1CPU/Ram: Xeon 2.8\2 gig RAMModel/Manufacturer: Dell PE2650 |
Comment: hi all, I have a win2k3 server with a 12 gig C partition. That partition is growing and now has slightly less than 1 gig free space. I've moved some programs to the D partition but have freed up little space. I've run cleanup but still not making a dent. I tried to run defrag but but it stops because I don't have the required 15% space available to run; only 4. I'm wondering if I can safely purge out all files and folders contained within C:\windows\TEMP folder? Any other thoughts on how to identify items items I can safely purge? (temp files, not needed historical logs, archived shared data in docs and settings, etc). If I've left out some info here that would be helpful please let me know and I will post. Be gentle, I'm new here... :) Thanks in advance, Slee72

Reply: (edit)Yes you can clear out the files in the temp folder but disk cleanup should have done that for you. How big is your pagefile? Technically it should be about 3gig but I have found you don't need it any where that large. Consider moving it entirely to the d: partition. That would a least get you the space for defrag to work. Imagine the power if you knew how to internet search

Reply: (edit)Another potentially good source for recoverable free space are patch uninstall files. If you look in your Windows directory, you should see folders that say something like $NTuninstallKB1111111$. If you don't see those, make sure you have your folder options view set to show hidden files. If you're sure you're not gonna uninstall any of these patches, you can delete them, or if you think you may, you can back them up and delete them, too. On a typical Windows machine, that can be easily a gig of space being used. "Enough, enough bowing down to disillusion! Hats off & applause to rogues & evolution! The ripple effect is too good not to mention. If you’re not affected, you’re not paying attention!"

Reply: (edit)How large is your HDD? You could use a partitioning program to resize. Life's more painless for the brainless.

Reply: (edit)I've the same issue with a Storage Server R2 on a RAID 5+1... I set the pagefile to 128Meg on C: and to 1Gig on D:,,,n and a few other little tricks, but still only have 4 Gig left on, this, a recent installation. Who (Dell?) figured that 12 Gig for a C: drive was adequate???

Reply: (edit)12GB for a C: drive is often plenty, it just depends what you are doing. Do you have volume shadow copy enabled? That can eat up GBs of data. Have you looked at the size the Documents and Settings folder? Those can also grow very large and contain data that isn't needed.
