Hi, im sorry if this is in the wrong category but as its part of my server here goes.
I'm fairly new to servers so i bought one to learn. I have moved the server from my bedroom to the study room and wanted to connect my printer etc in there so i thought.... i have a spare router somewhere....
The way i things are connected:
1. The Router downstairs gets the internet come through it and has all ethernet wires going to each bedroom & the study room
2. The Study room is where the server now is and i have a router connected from the single RJ45 socket (going to the UPLINK port, or should it be WAN) usin a crossover.
3. The server is now connected to the second router in one of the LAN ports.
I can connect to the router from the server screen & i can also connect to the router downstairs as i have seperated IP addresses but kept the same subnet, i.e the router downstairs is 192.168.1.1 & upstairs is 192.168.1.254 both with the subnet of 255.255.255.0
The problem im facing is that i cannot connect to the Internet with the server, im confused if the router upstairs needs DHCP enabled or not as the one downstairs is turned off (or should this be the other way round?)
I have manually configured all IP Addresses and DNS on the server, so i presume thats why i can connect to the router downstairs?
I apologise for the length of this & if i may have written this in a confusing manner but hey, i tried my best :)
Any help & suggestions would be fantastic help for me to learn with!
Thank You,Mehdi

internet router should have dhcp turned off as well as dhcp server on the 2nd router.
2nd router is NOT connected via wan port. You are just using it as a switch.
what is the ip address of your server?
Example of Oxymoron:
Person who is pro life and anti sex education.
Education is key to prevention. Prevent conception you prevent abortion.Abstinence training clearly isn't working.

Hi, thanks for your reply.
Ok i have got everything to work - a bit of trial and error led me to the solution. I had the DNS configured wrong as well as the IP addresses conflicted.
Anyway, apart from that the problem i have now is that with my laptop currently connected into the 2nd router has full internet & sharing but connecting to the server is the problem. I have Windows Vista Home edition i heard this can cause a problem? is there a way round this so i dont have to upgrade?
Ip address of the server is: 192.168.1.105
When i do: http://servername/connectcomputer it asks me to download the neccessary files but i get the error of:
--------
the server that is running windows sbs 2003 cannot be found. Verify the following before you continue:Ensure that the client computer has a wired connection to the sbs network. If you have a router performing DHCP services on your network, verify that the router is configured to use the computer running windows sbs as the primary DNS server.
--------
Please do note that DHCP is disabled on both routers.
Thanks again for your reply :)
