I've got a 20 computer network running XP clients with a 2003 domain controller. I have setup roaming profiles (at least I thoght I had) but its giving me trouble. Here's the setup:

Each user has a dedicatd hidden share on the server, eg \\SERVER\user$. I set the profile path to this and also mapped a network drive for the home folder to the same path. This is working because when I type %HOMEDRIVE% in Run, I get P, which is the drive I mapped.

The problem is, the roaming profiles are not saved back to this share on the server. When a user logs on they get a local profile on the XP machines, but this profile is not saved to the server on logoff, despite the profile type being set as roaming in system properties.

Because of this, the folder redirection I setup for My Documents fails, as P is empty, which means everybodies documents are saved on the various local machines, which is very annoying and inefficient.

I have fully checked share and security permissions, giving each user full control for their share and the folder on the server itself.

I have not yet delved into group policy, but I would have thought that the default settings would have made roaming profiles work. Any help would be appreciated.

I have no problem with my Roaming Profiles but my config is different...
I have two shares: "Profiles" and "users". I configured the profiles to be saved in \\SERVER\profiles\%username% and redirect users' "My Documents" to \\SERVER\users\%username%. I don't know if it is the best config but it work well.

I just set up the Roaming profiles and had the same problem at first, here is what I ended up doing...

set up a hidden share for ALL users to have access to '\\server\profile$' and gave domain\EVERYONE full permission (except supervisor) to this directory.

Then I set their profile path to '\\server\profile$\%username%' in "Manage Domain Users.."

The first time they log in to the domain they create a folder named as thier username in profile$ that only they have rights to, and when they log out their profile is copied from the local HDD to the server share ('\\server\profile$\%username%')

Your problem looks like it was probabally that you created their folders and they didn't have permissions to access them, but if you make their profile inside of an EVERYONE read-write share, the folders are created automatically and permissions are set.

NOTE: I also set the home directory to map drive Y: to the profile so they could easily access it

Good Luck

Do you have each profile configured to map the Home Drive to the user's folder?
