Roaming profiles not working
Imagine the scene, I have just set up an NT4 server PDC, as far as the server software is concerned inc service pack 6. I set up my first user account which is of course a domain admins account. I set up a workstation, windows XP SP2, which i joined to the domain successfully. All gone well so far.
I then think, I know lets make this guy have a roaming profile. On the server, I set up a folder called d:\home\%username% and a subdirectory My Documents. I log on as administrator on the server, and log off on the workstation, then Using User Manager for domains, I edit the account as follows. In the Profile path, I enter %servername%\rootdriveshare%\home\%username% and in the home directory, I enter the same but add the subdirectory My Documents. When I clicked close, it said the profile path could not be found and I needed to do it manually. Careful inspection, I had made no error, but there was no further prompting from user manager. I logged off and logged back on and there was a message. Word for word I can’t remember. But it was something like, error 67 : the local profile is newer than the roaming profile and would I like to use the local profile instead? Even though I say no, and despite changing settings in this profile, it makes no difference. When I log off and back on, the message reappears. On the workstation side. When I log on I get two errors, the first says that the server profile cannot be located, even though the profile path is clearly shared with the appropriate permissions. The second message from the workstation says, there is no local profile for me and so a temporary one will be created, which will be deleted when I log off. This is despite the fact that created a local as well as network account from the workstation.
How do I set up a roaming profile? Should I delete this account and start again from scratch? Your advice would be most welcome.

No! Why? Because the windowsNT forum is only for windows NT 4.0 workstation NOW. My PERSONAL EXPERIENCE is.... Server administrators no longer look at this site, they have all moved to windows server 2003. i have never had any worthwhile replies for server questions on this forum. Sorry if this sounds curt, but it is right!

Firist off in order to have a roaming profile you must have a profile in the directory.
Are you just trying to map the My Documents to a share on the server?
Roaming profile.
profile path = \\servername\users\%username%(copy the default profile from a XP PC to there. Any XP PC that logs in should create its own profile there if it has permision to)
Map My documents to the server.
I dont think you can set a group policy for this in NT4, but I may be wrong.
After a user logs into a 2k/XP PC.
Right click My Docs
change the target to the folder on the server you want the user to use.
