I have a domain with a child domain - every thing is fine - but if in the future can we sever the link between root and child to have 2 distict and non connecting domains.
Any ideas on how this can be achieved

1. Export your AD accounts in the child domain.
2. DCPromo all child domain's DC's down.
3. DCPromo all former child domain's DC's back up as a new domain of a new forest.
4. Import the AD accounts back in.

You could also look at the AD Migration Tools and simply migrate to a newly created domain of its own forest.
