I try to access the main server computer (running windows server 2003) using remote desktop. I am running XP Pro. But when I log in, it shows MY OWN desktop in the 'remote' window.
It still allows me to access the server settings, so that's good, but I can't access any directories or files on the server computer.
I need to be able to get to the server's desktop, not my own. It was working fine until about a week ago, then I'm not sure what changed.
Any suggestions?

I have a username that I connect with.
I should mention 2 things.
1. I am fairly new to the realm of servers and networking. (I inherited this task kind-of suddenly)
2. I can log in successfully from the same computer if I use someone else's username and password. It works perfectly. Thanks

Well, you can't go wrong with taking wanderers advice and seriously valuing his opinion and expertise. If anyone can help, it is he.
So, if you detail your network setup as far as DNS/DHCP, etc. He surely will offer some helpful suggestions.

That was sweet of you Jennifer. Thanks.
goodwinpro when you go to select what desktop you want to connect to, you have the choice of putting in a ip address, a host name or browse via the network. Which are you using?
This is what I need to know to start.
Are you ready for where Microsoft wants you to go today?

Ok - I'm using a host name to log in.
Here are a couple of other things I've noticed.
After logging in under a different username, I went into the "Documents and settings" and found a folder with my username. Inside that folder was "Desktop" and inside the desktop folder was a copy of everything on my 'real' desktop.
So I deleted the folder and tried to log in.... Worked great. BUT I found out that my remote desktop was booting up into the "TEMP/Documents and settings/desktop" folder. I don't know that I want to always log into a "Temp" folder.
So, I deleted my username folder. Then created a blank folder called my username. And when I logged in again the computer had copied all of my desktop and taskbar items over to the server again - creating the same problem I had before.
I looked through all the "synchronizing" options I could find, but I don't really know what I'm looking for.
Does this help at all?
Thanks

No. It doesn't help at all. I assumed when you said it shows your own desktop, it was showing the desktop computer you're using to run Remote Desktop Connection. Is that not the case? So, you're able to successfully Remote Desktop to the Server?
You said you wanted to get to the "Server's Desktop." What exactly do you mean by that?
If you login remotely to another computer, then you will see the Documents and Settings\YOUR userID\Desktop because...you're logged in.
If you want to see another Desktop, then you need to login with whatever account belongs to that Desktop.
Just an observation, if you're having trouble understanding this concept, you should really read up on Server Administration before you do ANYTHING on the Server.

I might add.... Another reason I know it's copying everything from my desktop to the server is because it takes FOREVER to log into remote desktop under my username (Maybe 20-30 min.). And I have some huge files on my desktop from video and audio editing.

OK, I THOUGHT I was seeing my own desktop. But actually, in playing with it a little bit, I found that my desktop is being copied to the server and that's what I see when I log in.
That's the bottom line.
I just want it to stop automatically copying my files to my users folder on the server.

Then, you'll need to change your profile from Roaming to Local
And... just an FYI, if you store those large files on your desktop, then if your profile gets corrupt and unrecoverable, you'll lose those files.
Store them (ideall) on another partition, or at least somewhere other than in your profile.
I reiterate, if this is all new to you (appears to be) buy a book on Server Administration.

That worked. Roaming -vs- Local. That's exactly what I needed. I'm so excited.
Thank you so much for your help.
And I will take your advise and start storing important documents OFF my profile.
About learning Server Administration. I was trying to avoid it, but it looks like I may have to do that.
Thanks again.

If you want the local desktop of the server just connect to the server with the administrator account instead of your user account. That is if you are an administrator ???
