For about 2 months now I have been using Remote Desktop from my Windows ME machine at home to access Server 2003 at my main office. I have been using a Brother MFC8500 Printer (attached to the Windows ME machine) to print locally from Server 2003 without a problem. The problem started when I changed printers to a HP 1300 Laserjet.
Even though the correct drivers are installed on the server, Remote Desktop is not recognizing the new printer and I can no longer print. To make matters worse, Remote Desktop no longer recognizes the Brother Printer either. It’s seems like Remote Desktop has no problem identifying
the first default printer on the client machine, but something goes haywire when trying to change printers. I have a coworker using a HP1300 Laserjet on the same system and it works fine. However, this was the first printer to
be installed on that machine that uses Remote Desktop. I installed Remote Desktop on another computer in my home and it instantly recognized the attached printer. But something tells me that if I wanted to change printers, I would have problems with that machine also. I am using a
parallel printing cable. I have tried deleting Remote Desktop and the printer and then reinstalling them, but it did not work. Any input would be welcome. Thanks !

For a small bit if help I might have installed all printers as a networked printer and also as an extra step added the printer driver for 98/ME on the server. If you can print to the ME/laser then the remote desktop either from tsweb or rdp should be identical. You must be able to properly print both a test page and from applications from the server.
Check also all setting like print permissions and hours.

Thanks for the input. I do have the 98/ME drivers already installed on the server. I'm beginning to wonder if the new HP 1300 is not going to work unless I have XP installed on my client computer. I'll keep trying.

as standard trubleshooting .. I would try to share the printer .. and put "everyone" as having access to it.
also I would try uninstaling/deleting the printers fromt he server .. and reinstaling.
But to be honest with ya .. ME is a very crappy OS .. and not good at all with networking... chances are very good that is your OS an nothing else cousing the problems.
I would use 98SE before ME .. heck even 95.

Darn it. I just read that somewhere what to allow. Seems it was a test question too. Darn, I will go back and look for it.
