Hi there,
I have a terminal server environment in my office LAN. Using remote desktop in office is no problem.
However, if I try to do the same thing using run->mstsc->ip address(global)->username, password
I can log in.
I have searched the forum for one concrete answer but could not find one.
Can you guys put some real world scenario on how to make a remote desktop client work from home, so that I as well as others will get help.

Lets say my global address is 208.73.210.34.
It has two terminal servers namely 192.168.1.85 and 192.168.1.95.
Windows XP in my home wants to connect it to one of the servers in this LAN.

What are the settings I need to do in terms of Firewall settings, router settings, port forwarding etc.

Any suggestion would be great.

Tom

You need to open port 3389 on your firewall and point it to the internal address of your terminal server. Then when workign remotely you log on via your "public" IP address or DNS name if there is one.

Hi wanderer, Hi scurlaruntings,
Thank you.
Actually, since you guys are really smart, why not give us some steps like 1, 2, 3, and you are done kind of guidelines for a default system such as:
1. Go to your router, click here and type 3389 and forward. etc
2. go to the windows server 2003 firewall, check this, type this etc etc.
It would be much easier that way and the solution will be a model for everybody.

Thanks

Negative. You log into your router and you forward the ports. If you dont know "how" to do that then consult your user manual or guide for your router. All routers are diffrent and have diffrent configuration pages. Thus its not possible to give an accurate guideline other than what has been explained already. Addtionally as your router already has a built in firewall theres no need to enable the windows firewall. This can be disabled and doesnt provide anymore security to your network other than the hardware firewall already present in your router.

Hi,
Awesome. But see, I have a domain controller connected to the router. And I have 1 other member server and 10 member computers in this LAN.
I forwarded port 3389 in the router and entered the private ip (192.168.1.200)of the domain controller, since every other computer is pointed to this server.
So, lets say i want to connect this domain controller from my home. So, I did mstsc and entered the global ip and entered admin's name. But what if I want to connect remotely to one of the member computers or the member server? How do I do it, since they will have a single global IP. Is it something like login name@domain name for user's name?

Thanks for your kind interest,
Tom
