hi,

for me it's impossible to use my USB speakers (also soundcard, same problem) under remote desktop. it definitely works within an ordinary windows session. as soon as connected via remote desktop, under "control panel"->"sounds and audio devices" all audio and mixer devices are disabled and the 'RDP Audio Driver' appears instead. Media players (windows media, winamp ...) behave like no audio device were available.

the client is configured to leave sound at the remote computer, and server policies don't restrict anything on that issue.

does anyone have an idea what this could be?

thanks a lot!
simon

Did you actually configure client audio redirection?
By default the server does not allow it.

gpedit.msc
--> Local Computer Policy
--> Computer Configuration
--> Administrative Templates
--> Windows Components
--> Terminal Services
--> Client/Server redirection
--> Allow audio redirection
--> enabled

I think so, but I have to check it.

Actually I don't want audio to be redirected, all I want is to play it locally on the server. Is that dependent on audio redirection settings?

To get Server 2003 to play audio at the machine while logged in remotely you have to specify Remote Desktop Connection to leave sound at server, and you have to login to the server with the /console option enabled. You can edit the Remote Desktop Connection short cut to read like this:

%SystemRoot%\System32\mstsc.exe /console

Then you'll be able to hear audio at the server.
