guys i run a windows 2003 server with DAT 72 tape drive,(DDS 4 Tape supports 20GB uncompressed and 40GB compressed)when i back up a 25GB data file,it will ask for the second tape to back up the reaming 5GB(on uncompressed mode)now my question is,the second tape has only 5GB of data, will i be able to use the free space on that tap for another backup, with out over writing the earlier 5GB data?

That would depend on the software you're using for backups but I would suggest you don't. In the scheme of things, tapes are cheap, just buy more.
