Registry Error after DC demotion

After running a Windows 2003 server as a domain controller in a mixed Windows 2000 AD environment, I demoted the Windows 2003 server using DCPROMO. Following the required restart the unit blue-screened with a REGISTRY_ERROR 0x00000051. There is nothing in the MSKB on the subject. I have tried the Repair Console, to no avail. Has anyone had a similar experience?
