I am having an issue with my KVM switch pushing control to different machines. I have noticed that some machines work via the KVM, and some do not. I am speculating that this maybe an issue with the KVM being PS/2 and remotely rebooting servers via Remote Desktop Connection.

Has anyone seen KVM PS/2 switches error when rebooting servers remotely? I have 36 servers that need to be rebooted each month, which is done remotely, but I have noticed that when work needs to be done local, the switch is not responding correctly.

Any help is welcomed, very frustrated at this point. Thank you.

Information:
F1DM216T - Belkin OmniView Matrix2 16-Port 2-User KVM
PS/2
Non-daisy chained.
Note: I am speculating that this is an issue with detecting the peripherals since PS/2 devices are implemented, but I was under the impression that KVM switches compensate for that.

Actually I am surprised you arent having more problems than that with your device not being an IPKVM. That may be the entire problem.

You can use the shutdown /r command either locally or remotely (/m). But I don't think RDP has any relation to this issue.

"Has anyone seen KVM PS/2 switches error when rebooting servers remotely?"

Nope. But Belkin isn't exactly the pinnacle of quality in KVM's, either.

hero - you dont think an IPKVM (like a 16X16X1) would resolve his issues? I'd be really leary of using a reg kvm to d restarts given you won't be able to see the post/raid config/etc during the boot

It may. But so might a good KVM.

Why can't you? I can see that stuff with my KVM...

I haven't used one remotely in quite a while so they probably have improved them since but, when I used them remotely in the past, I ran into failures often. Since using the IP, none.

Thank (all of you) for your help. I received a keyboard error message today on one of my support servers after I rebooted via Remote Desktop.

My KVM switch is shot. What would you recommend as a replacement that can accommodate 16 -32 servers?

Thank you.

I've only used a TrendNet 4 port and then large Dell and HP ones depending on what server brand an environment used. All of those worked fine.

Has any of you used the Belkin OmniView CAT5 KVM switch?

Is there any issues with this method I should research or know about?

I've seen a few clients with the regular PS2 ones from Belkin. Not very good...dunno about the CAT5 ones.

Never used those, only the HP ones (pricey but good). I can get you the model if you want to compare?

HP server components are always good...except for their price. But I'll tell you straight up if I were building a server infrastructure, I'd buy HP any day over IBM and Dell...
