Hi all. I have a static IP address (195.137.21.249) and a DNS server 'holly.oshearing.co.uk'. The static ip as shown above is directed directly to 'holly' whos local IP is 195.168.1.22. Holly is running Windows 2000 server with SP4 installed and DNS up and running (as far as I can tell). I've used nslookup on another system whos DNS server is set to the 195.137.21.249 and all seems well as it sees the DNS server there (also no obvious domain issues). Now obviously I'm new too this so do please say if there's anything that sounds odd here!
Right here's the problem. I'm trying to direct www.oshearing.co.uk to this home DNS server holly.oshearing.co.uk. I do however get the error: 'The real host IP for DNS holly.oshearing.co.uk does not match the IP you entered (195.137.21.249)' This makes some sense, but any idea of what I could do to get over this problem? Just for information I do have the system sitting in a DMZ at the moment so no firewall etc. should be affecting any settings (hopefully) - Thanks in advance

The reason you are getting this error is that the DNS name has already been registered as 212.78.206.150. What I don't know is how the DNS name was registered to this address. What you probably need to do is contact the company from which you purchased your DNS name and inform them of the necessary DNS change. Once they initiate the change, it will take an hour or more to propogate throughout the entire Inet. I hope this helps!
Thanks,
MAC

Thanks for the quick reply MAC. I have tried altering the default DNS servers (212.78.206.150 - as provided by the hosting company), but this is when I get the error 'The real host IP for DNS holly.oshearing.co.uk does not match the IP you entered (195.137.21.249)'. I was tld I needed a ...'private DNS zone for the corresponding FQDN that use LAN IPs' which I had a little trouble setting up! I perform a DNS lookup on a local machine and I see the server as holly.oshearing.co.uk with IP address 192.168.1.70. I assume this is correct for a local machine, but what happens when a external request is sent? The IP 195.37.21.249 is sent to Holly, but where/how do you get it too see hollys actual IP of 192.168.1.70?
Thanks again for your kind help.

The IP address that I listed in the first response is what you would get from an external response. That is the address that the Inet DNS servers are resolving to that dns name. You should never see hollys non-routable address (192.168.1.70) except on the local lan. The actual external address would be presumably the router's public address with a static route to the local address of the server or possibly on a secondary NIC in the server with that public address. I know this really doesn't solve anything for you, but I hope it maybe gives you some hints that you can use.
Thanks,
MAC
