I have a server with Windows Server 2003 and the following configurations:

Windows OS on a raid 1
The data on 3 disks raid 5
The Page file alone on a disk no raid

I have problems with the server and would like to ask how to do the following:

A: read the existing dump file on the server to figure out what is happening

B: configure the dump file so it has the information that i need and easy to find.

I have read about the dump file, but i am not sure what to do exactly. Some MS articles say that i need a page file on the sys or boot partion; which i do not have.

Please any advice is helpfull.

Hi

Do you really need that dump file? What problem exactly do you have with server?

The server is running SQL Server 2005 and during the weekly index rebuild the server gives me trouble. At 2 AM every Saturday i set it to rebuild the indexes for the two db on the server. I often check the server on Saturday morning to find it down. I go to the office and find the server un-responsive. The HDD lights are freaking out the mouse and keyboard do nothing, the desktop is up but the server is completly crashed. I have to hard reboot the server for it to work again.

When this first started happening I was also having other crash problem like when trying to run perfmon or update anti-virus the server would crash.

At the time I ran only the firmware updates for the server and everything was fine for three months. Then a few weeks back the server did the exact same thing. This time i ran a new firmware update, all the drivers update and a MS Hotfix.

Last weekend i was fine, but do not know when this will happen again. I would like to be able to analyze the problem by being able to utilize the dump file.

The server is a proliant ML350 with 2 quad zeons.

I run the insight diag and it comes up clean. There are a few HP forum posts about problem with the quads and the HDD controller, but there where driver update to resolve this.

Any thought would be helpful.
