Raid 1 & Raid 5 on the same server

Using the integrated controller, can I configure Raid 1 and Raid 5 on the same server. I have 4 (147Gb) hdd's. I need to at least configure Raid 1 for C:\ using 2 hdd's. D:\ for the remaining hdd's.

Yes. That is a pretty standard hardware array setup.
Ideally is this was a dual channel controller you would cable the mirror on one channel and the raid5 on the 2nd channel

Thanks for the reply. Would it be better to configure two Raid 1's, a C: partition and a D: partition. I only have one controller and that is integrated in the server.

If the controller supports hot spares [spare in your case] that would be the route I would go which is two mirror sets one for OS and one for data.
Once controller is fine for a mirror and raid5 array. I just like to optimize :-)

wander: If I'm not mistaken, Raid 5 requires 3 hdd at least, isn't it. How can KrimerJ do both Raid 1 and Raid 5 at the same time when he only has 4 hdd?
KrimerJ: If the space is not your first concern, but the integrity of the data is, I would go for the Raid 5 with 1 hdd spare configuration,

He cant. It depends on how many discs the controller supports. Most only support 4. Ideally he needs to mirror his OS and RAID5 the data. RAID5 is more efficient for data and provides greater scalability than a RAID1 for data. That provides ample redundancy with no downtime. But this would require 2 controllers one RAID card and 5 discs minimum with no hot spare.

I sure missed that one! Somehow I read FIVE drives. Yep two mirrored array or one raid5 is all that is possible given the limit of drives.

Wanderer, Azen, Scurlaruntings; Thanks to all for your replies and knowledge. I have decided to go with two Raid-1's. One for the OS and Apps and the other for Data both supported by a 147Gb hdd.
