I am trying to add a new Windows server 2003 domain controller to an existing windows 2000 server domain, make the 2003 server the primary domain controller then demote the 2000 server.
I have run adprep on windows 2000 server to prepare the ofrest for migration to server 2003.
When running DCPROMO on the windows 2003 server I get the following error message" Error joining the domain, the operation failed because the attempt ot join this computer to the domain failed, the specified user already exists"
The 2003 server is setup to use the ip address of the 2000 server as its DNS server.
I can ping both systems fro meact other by hostname and IP addresses.
In active directory sites and services on the 2000 domain controller only one server is showing up, which is itself.
In active directory users and computers i can see the 2003 server by name but am unable to delete it.
Please can you explain how ot remove the 2003 server from active directory and explain how to promte it properly as an additional domain controller with DCPROMO
I am completly new to server 2003 so any help would be much appreciated.
Disjoin the server from the domain, then run DCPromo, and select to make it a DC for an existing domain.
