For some reason I can not remember how to demote my 2000 server and promote my 2003 server. I just built my 2003 server and it was added as a domain controller. All of the users, computers, etc. were synced between my 2000 DC and the 2003 box. I want to shut down the 2000 DC and make the 2003 the new DC but I can not remember how to do it. If I just shut down the 2000 DC I can not log on to the 2003 box. Can some body refresh my memory?

Run dcpromo from the Run command to do one or the other (promote/demote).

If I run dcpromo on the 2000 server, will the 2003 server automatically take over or do I need to do anything else?
Thanks, Ron

There is something else - before you can demote the one server and promote the other, make sure the new domain controller is also a Global Catalog holder. When you run dcpromo, it will prompt you to make sure that there is another DC running Global Catalog. I did the same thing, shut down the one dc and the other did not take over to authenticate because it was running the global catalog.
So enable the other DC to be global catalog holder - it takes about 5 to 10 minutes to sync. Then when I ran dcpromo, it made it a little further but hung up on DNS because the dc that I wanted to promote was not running DNS. I added the DNS service and dcpromo finished it's job. If you plan to leave the demoted machine on the network as a member server - delete the netlogon.dns file from it or else the promoted dc will have some DNS problems.
