Ok I have setup my PPTP VPN to use TCP/IP and IPX/SPX. When I try to connect to it using my windows XP Pro Laptop the TCP/IP connects but I get the error 733 on the IPX/SPX. I also cannot view computers on the network including the server.
Thanks in advance,
Mike V

Maybe a problem of netbios.
Windows is using netbios protocol for name resolution.
Have you enabled netbios on the server and also in the protocol configuration of you pptp connection on your laptop?

Thanks for the quick response. Well I have IPX/SPX on both (thought netbios was now renderd obsolete), but netbios isn't one of my protocol options, can you tell me where I can get it for server 2003 and xp?

Hi Mike,

At the server, go to the LAN-Connection properties, click install, choose protocol, add, choose Microsoft and select Netbios.

At the workstation, choose properties of your PPTP connection, choose network and select the appropiate protocols.

Have you also checked, whether the service computer browser is running on that machines.

If you login as administrator, you should be able to connect to the administrative shares (C$, D$ ...).

You can try to map such drives with the command "net use * \\computername\c$"

First of all, are you running any novell software, or any other software that requires IPX? If not, then dont even bother running it... everything else will work over TCP/IP.

Also, it sounds like you need to put in a Host A in your DNS for the laptop. It probably doesn't resolve the name and doesn't know where to look. Check DNS.

Try connecting via IP address, instead of name. ie //server... //192.168.1.1 or whatever

good luck
