Phone numbers of contacts not showing in GAL

Some reason, when we put phone numbers in the telephone tab doesn't show up in the GAL. So, the only way we get the phone numbers to show up in the GAL is by putting everyone's main number under the general tab in AD in the "telephone number" field. Any ideas how to get the telephone tab to show up in the GAL?

yes. Using an Exchange server and Outlook clients.
