hello,

i just installed win server2003, and i had to erase my hard drive because you can not upgrade from xp pro.

when i did the clean install it did not
recognize my network card, so i installed the driver. no problem

but i have a question mark by PCI Simple communications controller. i have been researching this and have had many, many
different answers.

what i got so far is that the driver is missing from my modem. i have a pavillion hp 6740c. i went to the hp sight and looke at what shipped in the box and it says
a Mac soft modem. i searched for the driver and it only gives me mac os drivers.

my question: Am i right is this a modem driver. and can you point me in the right direction to obtain this driver

Likely it is a modem. Since it's a proprietary PC you'll have to download the appropriate driver from the OEM website..........if it's available. Occasionally you can figure out what the chipset is on a device like this and download drivers elsewhere when they aren't available on the OEM's website.

HP/Compaq is notorious for proprietary hardware you can't easily find drivers for. Truth be told, if you aren't going to be using the modem, you're wasting your time. If that is the case (ie: you're not going to be using the modem) I'd just forget about the entry in device manager and get on with my computing.

If however, you do require a modem, I'd go splurge and spend $50 or $60 on a good USR internal hardware modem. Software modems suck any way you look at them.
