Hi guys

Can anyone help?

I have been set an assignment in college and I am not looking for anyone to do this for me but just some general guidance.

Basically there is a network comprimising of several lans connected in a wan.

Each lan will have one database server and several clients (some handheld). The clients will only need access to their own lans server.

Each database server is connected to a central database server which is updated from the others nightly.

The central location also has a web server which will be accessed by the public to query the central db server.

What I am looking to do is analyse and evaluate linux and windows operating systems for each part of the network. And then suggest the best os for each part E.g clients, db server, web server, etc.

Can anyone point me in the direction of some good sources of information to help me out.

Thanks in advance.

I would start at the basic user. What do they know how to do? Can they use Linux? Can they operate Windows apps? This would be my concern. Secondly would be the legality of Linux should a lawsuit win.
Other issues would be type and amount of data. How secure do you want to be. Did you consider Unix?
Many sites post claims for and against each application and it's claimed speed. It boils back to the user. Can they use it?

I would be glad to assist you, unlike jethro clampet that seemed to miss your question entirely. Send me an e-mail and we will go from there.

I don't think I ever heard Jethro Bodine insult anyone for offering free advice.

Strictly speaking Jethro was a Bodine. His mother, Pearl, was married to a Bodine. Now Granny, she's a Moses. While Elly and Jed are Clampets. Granny is actually the mother of Jed's late wife. So they are not kin directly.
