Solved ntbackup failure on windows server 2003

Specs: Windows Server 2003

For the past few months we've been having problems getting ntbackup to run on our server. Sometimes it will run, but most of the time it doesn't. This is what I get in the log file:

Backup Status
Operation: Backup
Active backup destination: File
Media name: "Sys State Backup.bkf created 2/20/2013 at 11:57 AM"

Volume shadow copy creation: Attempt 1.
Timeout before function completed

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy: 0xffffffff.

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:ffffffff
Aborting Backup.

----------------------

The operation did not successfully complete.

----------------------

Note that both Microsoft Shadow Copy Services and Volume Shadow Copy services are running. I've tried some solutions that I've found online, such as re-registering the .dll files, but none seem to work so far. Any help will be appreciated.

✔ Best Answer

If it were me, I'd delete the existing backup set(s) and I'd recreate them and see if the new ones didn't work.

For anyone else that has this problem: we've been able to fix it and get the backups running regularly again. I think it had something to do with the registry, I ran ccleaner on the server, then restarted it and for the past week its been running smoothly, so I'm thinking that did the trick.

It's good you got it working but if your backups punk out again in the next few weeks/months, do yourself a favor and follow my advice. If it happens again, it will keep happening until you redo the backup set(s).

I've always hated using registry cleaners and typically recommend people avoid using them.

I've had quite a few occasions where backups on MS boxes that utlized ntbackup stopped working correctly and found the best solution in the long run was to just delete the original backup and then recreate it fresh.
