I have an NT 4 Domain w/ a PDC and 2 BDC, and a mix of windows 2000 and windoes NT servers. I have jsut added a Windows 2003 server to this domain. Can I add ADS to the Windows 2003 server in the same domain and make it take over? So if my NT Domain is ALPHA, and I installed the windows 2003 server into ALPHA. And I go through the motion of installing Directory Services to the 2003 server, will I be able to take over the domain ALPHA in ADS?

The best place to start researching a question like this is on microsofts web site. Try searching "migrating NT to 2003" to start with and expand your search from there. Read every bit of information you can find on the topic.
Also, doing google searches for information may help you find more info that will help you with this.

The quick answer is NO. You can not create a 2003 AD domain and have it part or take over for the NT domain. Apples and Oranges.
Recommended procedure is update the NT PDC to 03 server and then dc promo to a AD domain.

I was afraid of that, PDC to old and weak to handle Windows 2000/2003. Then I could probably get away with setting up new server with windows NT, and then making it a BDC. Then promote it to PDC, and then do the 2003 update and ADS? No?

That should work.
However, you still have a lot of reading to do prior to starting this process as there is a lot to know.
Also, if at all possible, you'll want to lab this as many times as necessary to iron out the bugs so the migration goes smoothly.

I was in the same boat. I had a really old NT PDC. We bought rack mounted servers and installed NT on one of those, promoted it to PDC and demoted the original PDC to a BDC.
The recommendation is to take the BDC offline, run the upgrade on your new PDC - if you run into problems then you can fire up your BDC and promote it back to PDC.
Our upgrade was from NT to 2000 and it went smoothly. We later upgraded to 2003 with no problems. I hope yours does too.

If you can't establish a trust between a 2000 and 2003 domain.....
Go to the Domain Controller Policy on the 2003 domain and disable computer configuration\windows settings\security settings\local policy\security options\Digitally sign communications (both instances).
Then run gpupdate to make the new settings take effect. Then establish your trust.
Good Luck
