I've installed AD and DNS on my Win03 server. I've setup DNS according to Microsoft instructions (I have the server's IP address pointing to itself in the network settings), created a Reverse Zone and I've configured a PTR record that points back to the server. I can ping the server by name or by address, and when I start NSLOOKUP I get the default server name and address correctly.
However, when I try to use NSLOOKUP for anything else I get an error message. For example, when I type the command
> NAME
I get the relpy with the correct server name and IP address, but the error message:
*** nvprod.nspv.com can't find name: Non-existent domain. ***I've tried to point the client's DNS address to 127.0.0.1 ... no luck and I've checked all of the settings in DNS and they look alright.
Any clues or help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Did you create PTR and A records for the clients?
If not try to register a client with your DNS server with the ipconfig/registerdns command (if they are W2K or XP clients)
Pointing a client to the address 127.0.0.1 is not going to help; it’s the loop back address of the nic.

Yes, I have an "A" record in the forward zone and a "PTR" record in the reverse zone.
I have also re-registered the DNS address with IPCONFIG.
I can run NSLOOKUP with no errors, but when I type the "NAME" command, it replys with the server name and IP address, but then I get the error message listed above.
Thanks

I think you are using the wrong syntax.
Instead of name try typing the host name you’re trying to resolve.
See the example belowC:\Documents and Settings\roynak>nslookup
Default Server: server2003.child.contoso.local
Address: 192.168.0.4> name
Server: server2003.child.contoso.local
Address: 192.168.0.4*** server2003.child.contoso.local can't find name: Non-existent domain
> xppc
Server: server2003.child.contoso.local
Address: 192.168.0.4Name: xppc.Child.Contoso.local
Address: 192.168.0.10> server2003
Server: server2003.child.contoso.local
Address: 192.168.0.4Name: server2003.Child.Contoso.local
Address: 192.168.0.4> roynak
Server: server2003.child.contoso.local
Address: 192.168.0.4Name: roynak.Contoso.local
Address: 192.168.0.6

DUH!!!!! Boy do I feel dumb.
When MS says "NAME" in the help, they mean type the name of the server, not the command NAME.
Thanks for the help ... I really appreciate it.

Just wanted to commend 'royn' on his
knowledge. I just started my long road
preparing for mcse 2003.I just joined this group and hopefully
can get some help in the near future.Best Regards
