Hi, I could use some help here. I am trying to learn the basics of Server 2003. Here is what I want to do. I have PC1-client. PC 2-client, both have either wire or wireless adapters.
pc3 is my server 2003. I can't get this network working at all. I've set up the DHCP and defined my Scope. 192.168.5.1 to 192.168.5.254.
I have 2 NIC cards in my server. NIC 1 receives INTERNET from cable modem. NIC two, I manually configured with ip 192.168.5.5, mask of 255.255.255.0 and gateway same as server 192.168.5.1
I have try to connect via network cable/and crossover cable from PC 3 (server) to PC 1 (client). Client receives, IP, mask, gateway, etc. But can't access the internet. PC 2, I have not even tried yet as I cant even get PC 1 to connect.

My overall idea here is to make a true network which my server (pc3) will handle DHCP and clients will access INTERNET through it. I have a router currently handling DHCP but can deactivate it and router now becomes a switch. I have tried thorugh the router/switch and get same results.

I am not very educated in the networking aspect but do have some basic knowledge and I'm very technically orientated. So whoever answer, dont feel you have the need to speak in smaller terms, I can follow technical lingo.

A speedy response is appreciated as I have been working on this for 2 weeks. By the way, all PC's have Windows XP Pro, except the Server, its Server 2003...same stuff I suppose.

Also, if you dont mind, you can also email me your suggestions to sflorman@optonline.net
Thanks
Shawn

If you're server's IP address on the LAN is 192.168.5.5 and you're using 192.168.5.1 as the Default Gateway on the client PC's, this won't work. The gateway address has to be the server's IP address.

What you need to do is enable and configure RRAS/NAT on the server to share the internet with your clients. Once you have it and your DHCP setup properly your clients will be able to access the internet.

On that note, your DHCP scope should be something like .25 to .250 This will leave you addresses for your server(s) and any devices that may require a static IP (like a network printer) and leaves .254 free as well. Typically most people use .254 for gateways like highspeed internet routers.
