Now what I want to be able to do now is add my XP workstion to the domain. How do I do this?

On the client PC open the NIC properties. Once you have them open ensure your DNS address (in TCP/IP settings) points at your DC. Then you'll want to change the DNS suffix of the XP PC to that of the domain. For detailed instructions on how to do that, open Windows Help and type in "change DNS suffix".

Hi that makes sense. I have now added the suffix to my workstation.

The DNS server is running on my win server 2003 machine. How do I find the IP address of that?? Once I have this I will then add it to my workstation nic.

Thanks.

Simple enough. Logon to the server. Open a command prompt window (ie: Start >> Run - type in cmd and hit enter) and type the following command:

ipconfig

Where it says IP Address: that's the IP address of your server. Enter that in the DNS Address of your client PC's IP settings.

You'll notice when you first open System Properties and click on the Computer Name tab, there's a button that says "Change". Click on it and in the window that opens, click on the "More" Button. Where it says Primary DNS suffix of this computer, that's where you enter your DNS suffix. When you're done that, click OK and then on the 'Computer Name Changes' window select the radio button beside "Domain:" and enter the domain name there as well to join the PC to the domain.

Hi Curt thanks for the help. But for some reason I am still having problems.

My server ip is : 192.168.0.3

The domain is called : House.Blackbeard
DNS suffix is : House.Blackbeard

----

On my XP Pro workstation I did as you said.

I set TCP/IP Primary DNS to 192.168.0.3
I entered the DNS Suffix as House.Blackbeard
I entered House.Blackbeard in the domain field.

Then I clicked the ok button. This brings up a username and password box.

Saying -
Enter the name and password of an account with permission to join the domain.

In Active Directory I created a User in the Users node. Simple name : User

When I supply the user name

User@House.Blackbeard
Password

I get this error msg.

The folllwing error occured attempting to join domain House.Blackbeard

The Network Path Not Found.

I have tried entering the username without the suffix and I get the same problem.

Any ideas what could be going wrong?

Thanks

hmmm.....you should be using an administrative account for joining the PC to the domain. Instead of going through the steps I listed previously, go back into System Properties >> Computer Name and click on the Network ID button. This will bring up a wizard to walk you through the domain joining procedure.

If it still doesn't work, the next thing I'd look at is your DNS setup. Something may very well be wrong there.
