Hi,
I have been having this problem for a while now, but I have decided to try and sort it out once and for all.Basically, I have used group policies to redirect my user's My Documents and Desktop folders to the file server - so they 'follow' them. This works perfectly, but whenever a user tries to install anything, a message appears saying "The folder path 'My Documents' contains an invalid character". (the users are local admins, so there shouldnt be a problem).
I usually get round this by logging on as administrator, installing the program, and logging back on as the user. Is there a way to fix this problem?
Thanks a lot,
Rob
P.S. The path to the server share is \\zeus\profiles$\%username%\ (I have tried removing the $ to no avail)

How did you do this exactly?

I renamed the share so that it no longer had the $ sign, (so it was no longer a hidden share), and updaged the GPO to point to the new share location. However, I still received the errors - so I switched back as I prefer to have the profiles share hidden (although permissions are set so as access is denied to the root of the share).
Thanks for the reply,
Rob

type "path" as a user
type "path as administrator
compare the two$ or % is a valid character.
I have also seen this error if the path is too long or contains a file name being accessed that is too long
This also may relate to local registry entries that are in conflict with GPO settings. For example the same key exists under controlset, controlset001, & controlset002. If only one key is changed while the other two exist as before there can be issues.
I think the clue here is it works under your account but not the users as local admin.
Give a person a fish you feed them for a day.
Ask a person to internet search and they learn a skill for a lifetime.

Well the difference between my account and the users' is that my folders arent redirected - which is why I thought that was the problem. I will try the path command and look into the registry.
Thanks a lot,
Rob
