I am trying to configure Windows Server 2003 as a DNS server and a Domain Controller. When I run DCPROMO, near the end of the wizard its says:
DNS Registration Diagnostics
Failed
'None of the DNS servers used by this computer responded within the timeout interval.'
'The SOA query for _Idap._tcp.dc._msdcs.hope.com to find the primary DNS server returned; The operation returned because the timeout period expired. (error code 0x000005B4 "ERROR_TIMEOUT")'
Does anyone know where things have gone wrong? All I need is the bare basics; Server where clients can login and share files and printers. No internet is connnected to the network.

In the server's NIC properties, point the server to itself for DNS.

What he said....and, don't try to configure DNS yourself before running dcpromo (if that's what you've been doing). Just let Windows configure it during the promotion.

but it has to point to itself and not the isp for dns. If isp you will corrupt your ad install.
