Hi,
I would like to know what kind of requirements are needed when implementing Exchange 2003 in a small network.

Before you install Exchange, make sure that your Active Directory is in good health and that you have a global catalog server on the same segment (best practice). Then, run both the forrest and domain prep prior to installation.
As for the D-Link firewall, make sure the appropriate ports are open and forwarded to the localhost of your Exchange box.

and for godsakes only foward the following ports
80 25
And do not foward the exchange server's RPC ports, though it would be nice to use exchange in native mode outside your lan DONT do it!!! let remote clients use the webmail OWA. I also sujest not fowarding pop3 ports

If OWA, why not forward 443 and have SSL encrypted connections? ;-)
