i'm currently running 2003 enterprise server on an ageing machine, and i want to replace the server without setting everything back up.
what's the easiest way to move active directory, IIS, exchange, and other settings onto the new machine without losing anything? thanks - matt

Ughh, that's a lot of stuff to move...
One option might be to do a "repair install"; Windows XP allows you to do this, I think 2003 does but am not sure. Basically you would install the hard drive into the new 2003 hardware, then run Windows 2003 setup and choose the "Repair Install" option. This process will make Windows tailor your system to the new hardware, but leave application settings pretty much intact.
Hopefully this would work... Ideally I would suggest you create a copy of your server's hard drive, then use that copy to experiment with the Repair Install on the new hardware and see how it goes.

I thought that you could just make another domain server and let it copy it. Then remove the old server.

you can use ntbackup to backup the system settings (u can select what settings to back up) copy the .bkf file it creates to cd, install windows 2003 on the new machine and then run the .bkf to restore the settings i never tried it personally but a friend of mine did that with no probs.

or you could hook up another dc like you suggested. just make sure you change the shares and other entries pointing to the old server to the new one

Look into the migration tools on microsoft's web site....some of them are made for doing exactly what the original poster wants to do.
