Hello,
My company currently keeps our "documents"
folder on our shared file server with
"offline" copies sync'd to the local drive of
any machine you use. I have a laptop and want
to reconfigure my account so that my
"documents" folder is kept on my laptop's
local hard drive without any sync'ing or
backup to the server. Is this possible?

Thanks in advance,
Jimi

Thanks for your help!

That's probably done by a group policy which you can't change but you can copy the same docs to another folder of your choice on your laptop.

Thanks for the help guapo. Could my IT
administrator accomplish what I'm asking by
modifying the group policy? How exactly would
he do that? He's tried a couple things but
nothing worked so far.

I've considered your suggestion to copy my
docs to another folder on my laptop's hard
drive, but most programs automatically point
their default folders to the documents
folder, and a few don't give you the option
to chance the default location. iTunes wont let you change the default
location of the music library file and I get sync errors all the time as a result.

Thanks for your help!

You can change your "My Documents" folder to anything you want. If you want, just move your data from your home folder on the server to your local drive. Keep in mind, you'll probably have to be responsible for your own backups.

As for your statement "iTunes for
example wont let you change the default
location of the music library file," that is not a true statement. Edit, Preferences, Advanced, General allows you to change the location of your iTunes Music folder.

Thanks Jennifer, but I think there is more to
it than that.

iTunes wont let you change the default
location of the music library file (iTunes
Library.xml), or the iTunes Library file
(iTunes Library.itl), not to mention the
folder which applications for my iPhone are
kept. I'm consistently getting errors when
Vista "Sync Center" tries syncronizing these
files as they are all treated as "offline
files".

How can I actually move the "documents"
folder from the server to my local hard
drive. Not just by creating a new folder I
name documents, but I want to move the actual
Vista "documents" folder to my hard drive. I
don't minding doing my own back-ups.

Thanks for your help!
