Hi
I need to do the following, but don't know how, or where I could read up on it.
Our company has a Win 2000 PDC, which we would like to replace with a Win 2003 PDC, bought brand new.
Currently we have the PDC still running, and added the new Win 2003 Server as a BDC.
I need to:
1. Transfer all the data on a drive on the current PDC onto the new server, keeping the exact directory structire
2. Make the new Win 2003 server the PDC, and demote the current Win 2000 PDC to a BDC.
3. Migrate all DNS and Active directory settings.
The PDC is a fresh copy, with no real job assigned to it yet. By that, I mean that I have not configered it to be a file server or or or...
Quite new at this, so any help would be appreciated.
PCG

Not to pick knits but the nomenclature has changed. NT 4.0 and earlier versions used PDC/BDC. With 2000 and up, there are only DC's (domain controllers) and PDC/BDC is no longer used.
The reasoning: With 2000/03 you have Active Directory and when a second DC is brought online in AD, replication between the DC's is automatic. Unlike NT 4.0 and earlier versions, you don't have to promote/demote from one role to the other. With AD, you only have one role....a server is either a DC or it isn't and if it is.....it is already performing the same role as your other DC(s).
I'm pretty sure all the info you require is on Microsoft's web site if you care to go look. Since you've already brought the 2003 server up as a DC, replication has already happened and the only things you should have to do is to transfer all FSMO roles to the 03 server and put a copy of the GC on it as well. Then transfer your data etc.
One question......If you're not planning on removing the 2000 server completely (physically) from the network, why not just leave things as they are (with two DC's) and save yourself a lot of reading and headaches? This would also give you redundancy in case one server crashes.
NOTEL You should always lab test any migrations before attempting them to help you iron out problems.
