we were running Exchange server 5.5 and then upgraded to 2003.clients are running Microsoft outlook xp and 2003,the problem here is, from the upgrade all the clients started getting the RETRY/WORKOFFLINE/CANCEL message when they open the outlook, it happens frequently with the clients ,if they select RETRY they can go in and use the mail, now the question is why is prompting for a such message? We have tried the following on the client side. This problem is there now more than 2 week and we still can’t figure it out, please give me some help..!!
- installed office XP SP3
- installed office 2003 SP
- installed office 2007
- created a new profile
- created a new mail box ( on the exchange)
- reinstalled office
- we even tried it with a new pc also
- tired without adding a PST fileRegards

Can you ping your exchange server by name?
I would suspect you did not configure 2003 DNS correctly. It should contain host and ptr records for the exchange server as well as a mx record.
Additonally the clients dns entry should be that of the MS DNS server and not that of your ISP.
Without these the clients don't know where to find the exchange server.

wanderer,
thanks for the post,
Yes I’m able to ping the mail server by its name, also client have the MS DNS (PDC) ip address as primary and secondary is left blank, MS DNS have the entries of the mail server in the PTR and MX record. This mail server is only used for within the organization not for internet mail. After many testing we found the following.- Clients who are under the additional domain control face this problem
- Clients who are under the primary domain don’t have this problem.Regards
Jana

How was the additional DC added to the forest?
DCpromo into existing forest as a DC?
Do you see a host/ptr record for it in DNS?
If you go to DC1 and bring up AD users and computers do those users attached to DC2 show up?I suspect from your description it was dcpromoed into the same name but different forest which would explain the lack of communication between DC's.
